Title: Delay Tolerant Network and its usage in Emergency situation

Speakers: Prof. Sipra Das Bit, Professor, IIEST, Shibpur

Abstract: Delay tolerant network (DTN) has become a topic of interest in networking since the last decade. Extensive research has been conducted in this domain especially to achieve ubiquitous connectivity even in the remote inaccessible areas. In this tutorial we will primarily discuss comprehensive overview of DTN including its unique characteristics, challenges, applications, architecture, routing protocols, multicast data forwarding, fairness in message delivery etc. Subsequently, we will focus on a particular implementation of DTN made with low-power handheld devices (e.g. smartphone) and its wide usage in real-life applications. This fast-deployable network may be used as a low-cost solution for making emergency makeshift communication infrastructure in absence or partial presence of conventional communication network (e.g. PSTN, cellular network). Finally, a couple of important services developed in this application domain, namely Post-Disaster Map Builder and Face recognition of disaster victim using smartphone based DTN will be elaborated. The tutorial will be concluded by highlighting on open research issues in DTN and its usage.
